Air Force Link
AFNEWS has more than 480 Air Force and Army military and civilian members assigned to 28 locations worldwide. They communicate news, information and entertainment through print and electronic media -- keeping the total force, families and the American public informed during peace and war.
AFNEWS headquarters is in San Antonio, Texas. It is made up of three major directorates, led by a command staff and complemented by the inspector general, command support, command resources and readiness, and several support functions. The agency also deploys a Combat News Team during certain operations and exercises.
The mission directorates:
- Air Force News Service provides news and information via print, broadcast and Internet products.
- Army and Air Force Hometown News Service reports on the accomplishments of Army and Air Force members, and certain DOD civilians, and sends news releases to their hometown media outlets.
- Air Force Broadcasting Service manages Armed Forces Radio and Television Service outlets owned and operated by the Air Force. Its mission is to inform and entertain DOD members and their families stationed overseas.
- Communications and Information Systems Directorate provides, operates, maintains and protects the communications-information systems, networks and infrastructures needed to create and distribute electronic and print products about the Air Force to military and public audiences.
The Air Force News Agency is located at Kelly Air Force Base, Texas. It was known as the Air Force News Center until 1991, and between 1978 and 1991 it was called the Air Force Service Information and News Center.
The organization's mission has changed through the years. AFSINC was charged with assisting Air Force commanders by communicating prompt and factual information about the Air Force to Air Force people. It was also responsible for communicating with the public through the Army and Air Force hometown news program and several other media.
Over the years, AFNEWS' mission has broadened to include management and operation of the Air Force Broadcasting Service, which provides news and entertainment, through radio and television, to American forces outside the United States.
The information AFNEWS communicates to Air Force people and the American public has expanded over the years from primarily print products to a wide variety of print and electronic products and services. Day-to-day management of the Air Force's official homepage, Air Force Link, plus satellite distribution of a weekly show produced for American television viewers and Air Force people worldwide are just two examples of AFNEWS keeping in step with technological change.
